Custody of Kaya Klitschko was decided in 2018, when her father arrived with papers and her mother, after fighting them, signed. What a Los Angeles probate judge gave Wladimir Klitschko on 8 October 2026 is a different instrument entirely, and the headlines have been merging the two. He now holds temporary guardianship of his daughter’s estate, which is to say of her mother’s. Hayden Panettiere died on 16 August, aged 36. No will has been made public. Kaya is 11, and she is the sole heir.
What does guardianship of an estate actually mean?
It means authority over money and property belonging to a child, and nothing else. Klitschko has raised Kaya in Europe since the couple’s 2018 split; nobody in this case is asking a court to change that. The question before the judge concerned paperwork, bank details and boxes. The petition he filed in Los Angeles County probate court on 24 September asks for the power to act on her behalf while her mother’s estate grinds through probate, on the grounds that the move is urgent and essential to stop the property being lost, damaged or dissipated before a permanent representative is appointed.
Intestacy in California is unsentimental and fast to describe. A legal expert told People that without a will, everything would pass to the child, that a minor would not control the money straight away, and that Panettiere’s parents would likely not be entitled to it. The filing puts the same point in blunter language: “This directly and adversely affects Kaya, as she is the sole heir entitled to the entirety of Hayden’s probate estate,” as quoted by meaww.
So a 50-year-old former heavyweight champion of the world has been appointed caretaker of an actress’s handbags, jewellery boxes and residuals, on behalf of a child who speaks five languages and rides horses.
Why did an 11-year-old have to appear at all?
Because the court needed to hear from the person whose interest was at stake. Kaya appeared remotely on 8 October in a white T-shirt, hair pulled back, soft-spoken and composed as she answered the judge’s questions. Her father was in the room with her and not on camera. Her part in the proceedings was to confirm who she was.
That was all. The hearing did not require her to describe her mother, her home or her wishes. The judge then granted the temporary guardianship and told her she would not be needed for the next hearing.
What is alleged to have gone missing?
This is where the filing stops being administrative. According to the court documents, reported by Hola, the locks on Panettiere’s property were changed after her death, and storage units holding clothing and accessories she had worn for public appearances were moved as a precaution. Klitschko alleges that jewellery and other personal belongings are missing or unaccounted for. At the hearing, his lawyer Diane Park explained to the judge why the matter was urgent: they believed some of Panettiere’s jewellery had been sold to pawn shops after her death, according to the Associated Press report cited by meaww.
None of this has been proven. No court has made a finding against anyone, and no individual is named in the public reporting as responsible. The allegation sits in the file as a reason for speed rather than as an accusation with a face attached.
There is a second tranche of property in play, and it is in government hands. Klitschko’s filing states that federal agents accessed Panettiere’s Los Angeles home as part of the continuing investigation into her death and removed items belonging to the estate. He wants standing to ask for them back once investigators have finished with them. A guardian who cannot make that request is a guardian of an empty room.
How much money is actually involved?
Less than the drama implies, and nobody official has said. The value of the probate estate has not been disclosed in any filing retrieved; what circulates instead is Celebrity Net Worth’s estimate of $6 million at the time of her death, with some outlets, including Hello, citing figures as high as $10 million. The same site tracks the earnings behind it: $75,000 an episode on Nashville, more than $2 million across four seasons of Heroes, roughly $1 million for Scream 4. That is a career’s worth of television money, and television money tends to arrive in instalments long after the show has finished, which is precisely the sort of asset a court appoints someone to collect.
Celebrity Net Worth puts Klitschko himself at $90 million, built on paydays it estimates at around $17.5 million against Alexander Povetkin, about $23 million for Tyson Fury and close to $20 million for the Anthony Joshua fight that ended his career.
The temporary guardian is, on those estimates, worth roughly fifteen times the estate he has been appointed to protect.
Which is the quiet point of the whole exercise. The pursuit of a pawned bracelet has nothing to do with the money and everything to do with the fact that it belongs to a child who cannot yet pursue it herself.
What did the coroner find?
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina ruled the death an accidental overdose on 22 September, more than a month after Panettiere died. Four substances were identified alongside fentanyl: 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. “The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol and Quetiapine,” the office said, adding that the manner of death was ruled accident, in a statement published by PinkNews.
The timings are in the record. A 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest came in at about 1:51pm on 16 August. She was pronounced dead at 2:32pm. The Associated Press, citing the coroner’s report, said she had been released from a drug rehabilitation facility in Malibu weeks earlier.
Police said a preliminary investigation had not indicated foul play or suspicious circumstances. The Greenville Police Department has also said its own investigation remains active and has not been closed, and that detectives will continue to follow leads. Both things are true at once, which is why the estate’s property is sitting in evidence rather than in storage.
What happens on 7 December?
A long-term administrator. The temporary guardianship runs only until one is appointed, according to the Associated Press report of Judge Stephanie Santoro’s ruling cited by meaww, and the next hearing is listed for 7 December. Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, has said she does not believe her daughter left a will and expects the estate to pass to Kaya, as reported by Law Commentary. Whether any trust exists has not been established publicly, and nothing in the filings retrieved suggests anyone has found one.
Vogel and her daughter were estranged, a fact she has stated herself, and she has disputed parts of the memoir Panettiere published in May 2026. “I want Hayden to be remembered for the talented, you know, beautiful, outgoing, intelligent woman she really was,” she told ABC News in August.
In that memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere wrote about the custody decision she had made eight years earlier. “Not being under the same roof with her every day has been the most gut-wrenching experience of my life,” she said of life without her daughter, as quoted by LADbible.
The arrangement she described has now inverted. Her daughter’s father holds the keys, the storage receipts and the standing to chase what was hers, and the girl who briefly appeared on a courtroom screen to confirm her own name has been excused from attending in December.
