Following a year-long hiatus, many of the world’s biggest annual events have already been able to make a return for 2021 – this week, it was the turn of the iconic Cannes Film Festival.
Having opened on the 6th July and closing this forthcoming Saturday 16th, there have already been plenty of memorable moments, with more still yet to come.
With no shortage of parties, premieres and awards ceremonies celebrating the best in film, Cannes is often quite rightly recognised as the world’s most iconic film festival. Always a glamorous affair, the 2021 Cannes Film Festival has been no different – in many ways, it’s come back bigger and better than before.
This week saw the highly-coveted Critics’ Week Grand Prize Winner title given to Feathers, a comedy-drama set in contemporary Egypt which follows the journey of a wife and mother whose husband is accidentally turned into a chicken by a magician. It’s a huge achievement for director Omar El Zohairy, who makes his feature film debut with this surprising piece.
There is, of course, the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award, presented to those who show the most promise in front of or behind the camera – the biggest stars of tomorrow, quite possibly. This year, the winner was Sandra Melissa Torres, who picked up the award thanks to her role in Amparo, in which she portrays a working class mother desperately attempting to prevent her son’s military conscription in Colombia.
Other winners included Olga, A Tale Of Love And Desire and Zero Fucks Given, with several of the winners having their world premiere take place at the festival itself. This year’s proceedings featured thirteen world premieres overall, each one a chance for its famous attendees to walk the red carpet, many of them for the first time since last March.
Stars from both on and off the silver screen have been out in force to celebrate the festival, each one dressed to impress those looking on. The world premiere of Story Of My Wife – Ildiko Enyedi’s stunning adaptation of the 1942 model by Milan Furst – saw Poppy Delevigne take to the iconic walkway alongside figures such as Lady Victoria Hervey and model Marta Lozano.
The main event for many was the premiere of iconic director Wes Anderson’s latest title The French Dispatch, which stars a host of Hollywood favourites including Timothee Chalamet and Tilda Swinton. As the director’s first release since previous award-winner Isle Of Dogs, there has been no shortage of excitement surrounding the comedy-drama.
Other stars at Cannes so far have included Bella Hadid, actress Jodie Turner Smith, former first lady Carla Bruni and beauty and travel influencer Hofit Golan, who has been sharing her beautifully styled red carpet looks with fans on Instagram.
So far, Cannes Film Festival 2021 has been more than enough to get people excited, with several awards announced and world premieres taking place. However, with a few days still to go, we’re sure that there are yet more surprises to come.
