Ten years together, a Rome-made yellow diamond, a two-word caption and a string of heart emojis. Grace Kelly’s granddaughter announced her engagement the way she has conducted the entire decade: at arm’s length, on her own account.
The detail I can’t shake is the emojis. Not the stone, which is doing the heavy lifting in every republication of the story, but the small yellow hearts Tatler reported she strung after the caption, the punctuation of a seventeen-year-old rather than the thirteenth person in line to a throne. A woman with a Rome-cut diamond on her hand and a grandmother who won an Oscar, posting like the rest of her year group.

Princess Alexandra of Hanover, youngest child of Princess Caroline and Prince Ernst August, turned 27 in July. On Friday 11 September she revealed her engagement after a ten-year romance to Ben-Sylvester Strautmann, also 27, in a series of photographs on her own Instagram account. No palace statement. No court photographer. Twenty thousand likes and counting, per Royal News.
The Caption
Two words: “The marriage plot.” Then the hearts.
It is a very good piece of writing for someone who has published almost nothing else. Ten years of a relationship that Monaco Life dates to late 2016, conducted across Rose Balls and Grand Prix grandstands, and the entire announcement runs to a noun phrase. Compare that with the volume of output from the rest of Grace Kelly’s eleven grandchildren, a group that includes a fashion model, an actress and an influencer, and you begin to see the strategy. Alexandra is described in coverage as keeping a more private profile than most of the Princely Family. The most private one got the best line.
A Decade Nobody Photographed Properly
They grew up in the same principality and, by the account in circulation, moved in overlapping social and academic circles there. He was born in Lower Saxony and came to Monaco as a child. She skated; he played basketball for Monaco’s under-18 national team. In 2015 she represented Monaco in figure skating at the European Youth Olympic Festival, which is to say she was competing for the country her grandmother married into before she was old enough to drive.
They were first seen together publicly in late 2016 and confirmed it the following year. During the Paris 2024 Games the pair sat with Prince Albert II at a water polo match, according to the Monaco Olympic Committee. In August 2026 they marked ten years with a few days in Copenhagen. That is, more or less, the full public file on a decade.
Strautmann’s own biography is the sort Monaco now produces in quantity: a business management degree from King’s College London, a stint abroad in e-commerce at L’Oréal, and a digital solutions company of his own, BSS Monaco, per an interview he gave Monaco Life in 2024. There is also an older, stranded line in a 2021 Gala feature, since republished, describing him as
> “heir to a wealthy family who made his fortune in the agricultural machinery trade.”
No current biography of him corroborates it, and nothing links him to any named manufacturer. I mention it because it is the one claim the internet keeps recycling, and because the absence of corroboration is itself telling. Whoever the Strautmanns are, they have not been briefing.
Reading the Stone
Here the reporting splits, which is the most interesting thing about it. Tatler reported a 4.8-carat Fancy Yellow diamond chosen by the groom, designed by Antinori di Sanpietro, flanked by two trillion-cut stones and set in 18-carat yellow and white gold. The Mexican daily Excelsior described an elongated cushion-cut yellow diamond framed by two triangular stones, set in platinum and 18-carat yellow gold. Same ring, two vocabularies, no primary statement from the jeweller and no valuation published anywhere.

Antinori di Sanpietro is a Roman house that describes itself as dealing in investment-grade gems, extraordinary sizes, lasting value. Note what is missing from every account of the ring: a number with a currency sign in front of it. In a week when the story ran on four continents, nobody produced a price, because nobody was given one.
Excelsior also noted the resemblance to the ring worn by Beatrice Borromeo, who married Alexandra’s half-brother Pierre Casiraghi. This is the part I’d repeat at dinner. The Grimaldi women of this generation do not commission statement jewellery so much as join a set, and the set is yellow, cushioned, Italian and quiet. The rhyme is the point. It is also the thing no press release could have achieved.
Thirteenth in Line
She sits 13th in the succession to the Monégasque throne, which is a polite way of saying never. That frees her from the parts of the job her uncle cannot escape and leaves her with the parts that compound: the name, the network, the address.

The family money, for the record, is estimate territory rather than disclosure. Celebrity Net Worth puts Prince Albert II at roughly $1 billion and Princess Caroline at around $100 million, assembled from inherited Grimaldi wealth, private investments and property. Le Monde, investigating in 2024, found Caroline’s royal allowance for 2023 came to about $980,000. Alexandra’s own position, any trust, any holding, does not appear in any source I could find. Which puts her in company with the principality’s other discretion-first fortunes, the people who race cars for sport and agree £100m for a former Mayfair police station without ever explaining themselves to a reporter.
The Comments Section Told You Everything
The congratulations arrived from exactly the people you would map onto a seating plan. Her first cousins Louis and Pauline Ducruet and Camille Gottlieb, the children of Princess Stephanie. Princess Olympia and Princess Nina of Greece. Kitty Spencer, Diana’s niece. Alexandra Leclerc, wife of the Ferrari driver. A guest list assembling itself in public, under a post nobody was asked to run.
No wedding date has been announced. No venue, no plans, nothing that would let an outlet write the Monaco Cathedral paragraph it is clearly itching to write. Grace Kelly has been gone since September 1982 and the comparison arrives anyway, uninvited, in every headline including this one.
In August they went to Copenhagen for the decade. A month later, the hearts were yellow.
