In the photograph that made Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Instagram official, the future King was, by his own joking account on BBC One, quietly trying to shuffle the boyfriend out of shot.
November 2013
Prince William and Taylor Swift go back further than Travis Kelce does. On 26 November 2013, at the Centrepoint Winter Whites Gala at Kensington Palace, Swift, Jon Bon Jovi and the prince sang on stage together, according to WWD. That is a sentence few heirs to the throne have earned, and the clip has never quite gone away.
Kelce would later tell listeners of his podcast that this was where his future wife and the prince first met, Fox News reported. It is a useful thing for a boyfriend to know. When you are introduced to a prince, it helps to have a working idea of how long he has known your girlfriend.
A royal who will sing in public has already made his peace with the camera.
December 2014 to November 2016
The years that followed set the house pattern, and it is a simple one. The royals stay where they are. The famous come to them.
On 8 December 2014, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Beyoncé and Jay-Z crossed to William and Catherine between the third and fourth quarters to say hello, Time reported. The couple also posed backstage with LeBron James at the same game, according to WWD. Anyone who has spent an evening at a basketball match trying to catch a waiter’s eye will note that the Duke and Duchess, as they then were, managed three of the most photographed people in America without leaving their seats.
In April 2016 the traffic ran the other way, a little. William, Catherine and Prince Harry hosted Barack and Michelle Obama for dinner at Kensington Palace, and the party posed for a photograph before going inside, NBC News reported. In November that year Harry and Rihanna attended a Golden Anniversary Spectacular concert in Barbados during an official visit to the Caribbean, according to WWD.
Each of those pictures did a job for both sides of the frame. Nobody needed to say so.
21 June 2024
Wembley Stadium, the first night of the London leg of the Eras Tour, and William’s 42nd birthday, as Yahoo noted. He brought his two eldest children. Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, was 34, and so was Swift.
The result was two photographs, which matters more than it sounds. Kensington Palace posted one: Swift in a sparkling pinstripe suit, arm extended, taking the selfie, under the line “Thank you @taylorswift13 for a great evening!” Gulf News reported that Swift posted a different photo of herself with the royals and Kelce. The palace and the pop star each published the version that suited them, which is how a joint statement works at that level.
Swift’s caption read: “Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start,” as NBC News reported. There cannot be many people who have wished the heir to the throne many happy returns with the abbreviation M8. Fewer still have had it go round the world by breakfast.
Outlets disagree on whether the pictures were taken before or after the concert, and the palace’s own account, as relayed by CBS, does not settle it for everyone. What every version agrees on is the line-up: Swift, Kelce, William and the children.
22 to 26 June 2024
The next morning Swift put her photograph on her verified Instagram. CNN reported that it was the first photo of Kelce she had shared to her main feed, which made it the couple’s Instagram-official post.
The qualifier is doing honest work. Swift had posted footage of Kelce on social media back in February, E! reported, and the relationship had been public since she turned up at a Chiefs game the previous September. Nine months, then, between first sighting and the main grid, and when the moment came it arrived with three members of the Royal Family in shot.
Kelce was gracious about it. On New Heights, the podcast he hosts with his brother Jason, a former NFL centre, he told listeners “We met royalty,” Fox News reported on 26 June, adding that he had been fortunate enough to meet Prince William.
Most couples remember their first photograph together. Few have to share it with the line of succession.
August 2025 to July 2026
On 26 August 2025 Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram, and that post passed 37 million likes, according to Athlon Sports. No serious outlet has put a figure on the Wembley post. In the household economy of a couple whose engagement draws numbers like that, the royal selfie counts as a founding document.
The wedding took place on 3 July 2026 at Madison Square Garden, Hello! reported. Hours before it, New Heights released a new episode with an unexpected guest. William talked for about 30 minutes, Rolling Stone reported, about his love of football, the 2024 Eras Tour and the World Cup. He has been involved with the Football Association for 20 years, which explains the fluency. Asked about the King’s enthusiasm for the game, he replied, by Rolling Stone’s account, “Absolutely not… My father hates football.”
Jason Kelce introduced him with the full run of titles, Lord of the Isles and Great Steward of Scotland among them, according to Yahoo. Scotland, for its part, keeps a hereditary rank of its own outside the peerage, the Scottish barons, who in Scots precedence stand below knights and above esquires. None of this appears to have troubled the Kelces.
Travis told the prince that meeting him and his children at Wembley had been one of the coolest moments of his life, ABC News reported. The episode went out the morning of the groom’s own wedding. That is quite a booking for a podcast.
23 October 2026
Graham Norton has form with this couple. Swift sat on his show in October 2025 and said she would invite him to her wedding, Yahoo reported. A year on, William appeared on The Graham Norton Show, broadcast on BBC One on Friday 23 October; AOL described him as a surprise guest, and Entertainment Now reported that he stayed for the full hour while promoting Earthshot.

Norton asked whether he had been aware of the significance of Taylor’s post. William’s answer, as Yahoo printed it: “I wasn’t until recently… I hadn’t appreciated the significance, and actually – I was trying to move him out of the photo!” Then: “Travis kept coming back in, and I couldn’t work out why he kept coming back in! I was trying to move him out so it was just me and Taylor and the children!” The fullest transcript carries both lines. The audience laughed in shock.
It is a very good joke, and the shape of it is the shape of the past 13 years. A man who has spent his adult life being the fixed point in other people’s photographs finally met someone determined to stay in his. On the general business of being photographed, Entertainment Now reported him calling it a privilege to operate “the popcorn machine” wherever he goes.
Geo.tv reported that Kelce had not yet responded publicly. He hardly needs to say anything. The photograph is on his wife’s Instagram, and he is still in it.
