Billboard Music Awards 2021: The Highlights, The Winners & More

May 24, 2021 Share

Following a year where good music was a much-needed tonic to the strangest of times, Billboard’s 2021 awards were highly anticipated by thousands across the globe.

The biggest players from the music world were out in force last night, as Billboard recognised the artists, songs and albums that kept us going across the last twelve months. There was also some unforgettable live music moments, as host Nick Jonas welcomed artists such as The Weeknd, BTS & Doja Cat to the stage to perform their biggest hits from ‘the year that never was’.

Now, as the red carpet is rolled up and winners head home after an unforgettable evening, DDW takes a look at some of the highlights, including which artists won big during the ceremony.

Here are the highlights, the nominees and the winners from the Billboard Music Awards 2021.

Billboard Music Awards 2021 Highlights

It was certainly a night to remember, with several iconic performances taking place during the show. Even host Nick Jonas welcomed brothers Kevin and Joe to the stage to revisit some of their greatest Jonas Brothers hits, as well as their newest hit, ‘Leave Before You Love Me’.

The show was kicked off by Doja Cat and SZA, whose performance of ‘Kiss Me More’ provided the perfect opener. With Doja known for the stunning live remixes of her tracks that she reserves specially for awards shows (We all remember the heavy metal version of ‘Say So’ from MTV’s EMAs, right?), the performance was certainly highly anticipated.

However, perhaps the evening’s most-anticipated performance was from K-Pop phenomenon BTS, who appeared via live link to perform their award-winning track, ‘Butter’.

One artist who can always be relied on to deliver a stunning live moment is The Weeknd. Having already put on some truly incredible performances to support his universally-acclaimed album After Hours, you’d think that innovative new performance ideas would be difficult to come by. In the end, The Weeknd chose to impress with some slick, movie-level car-reography as he performed in front of a convoy of convertibles, dodging the automobiles as he performed ‘Save Your Tears’ in an LA parking lot.

Given the quarantines and home-schooling of months past, you’d think that the parents amongst the nominees would be looking forward to an adults-only evening. However, the recipients of two of the evening’s special honors brought their mini-me along for the ride.

Icon Award winner Pink and her 9-year-old daughter Willow had the audience enchanted by an impressive Cirque De Soleil-inspired performance of their mother-daughter duet ‘Cover Me In Sunshine’, which saw them showing off some incredible synchronized acrobatic skills.

Meanwhile, Artist Of The Decade winner Drake was also joined on stage by his adorable son, Adonis. Not for a collaborative performance, however – overwhelmed by the awards show atmosphere, the three-year-old promptly started crying during his dad’s acceptance speech.

Of course, the real highlights of any awards show are the awards…

Who Won At Billboard Music Awards 2021?

The nominees list this year was certainly a varied one, with awards recognising a wide range of genres, the success of tracks across a range of platforms and with honors awards giving special recognition to some of the world’s biggest artists.

The Weeknd was leading the way with the most nominations, having been recognised in 16 categories. Following close behind was DaBaby with 11 nods and the late rapper Pop Smoke with 10.

Pop Smoke wasn’t the only recipient of posthumous nominations, as Juice WRLD was nominated for 7 of the evening’s awards.

So, who stepped into the ceremony with awards hopes last night – and who left with a BMA in hand?
