The débutante ball that began at Versailles in 1958 now refuses payment outright, while the birthday that has the internet reaching for its calculator runs on a Cartier bracelet, a pink Birkin and a rumoured Lil Baby set.
Alabama Barker’s twentieth birthday came with two price tags that the American celebrity press could not agree on. Now a third list is doing the rounds. A clip shared on X, presented as a scene from The Kardashians, attributes to her a birthday wishlist of a Lil Baby performance, a wedding venue and something described as a Rolls-Royce brand sponsor. No serious outlet has yet matched the clip to an episode, which has not stopped anyone from pricing it. People have been costing the coming-of-age party for a long time, though for most of that history the people paying would have preferred to die than say the number.
1958
The template was set in the Orangery of the Château de Versailles, where the first débutante ball was held in 1958. A young woman was presented, a room agreed that she had been, and the evening went into the family memory rather than the family accounts.
No serious outlet has put a figure on what that first ball cost. For a room built to keep citrus trees warm through a French winter, it was a reasonably discreet arrangement.
1994
Ophélie Renouard created Le Bal at the Hôtel de Crillon in 1994, and built it on one rule that most modern birthdays have since broken. According to the organiser, one cannot buy tickets or pay to take part, and it describes itself as the only débutante ball in the world that is by invitation only. The cavaliers wear white tie. The couture houses each dress a débutante, and the gowns and jewels are lent by the houses, according to the Paris concierge Maison Silaïa.
Money can get you to Paris, but it cannot get you through the door.
The roll call shows how well the rule has worked. Fortune listed past débutantes including Lori Harvey, Dree Hemingway, Autumn and True Whitaker, Scout and Tallulah Willis, Ava Philippe and Lily Collins, a line-up no casting director could assemble on budget and, officially, nobody bought. The ball raises money for charity, and its beneficiaries over the years have included Enfants d’Asie, Seleni, ARCFA and World Central Kitchen. Fortune reported that the 2022 edition moved to the Shangri-La Paris after a two-year hiatus.
The organiser’s rule holds only as far as the ballroom door. Maison Silaïa estimates that a typical family spends €40,000 to €120,000 on the surrounding weekend, covering the hotel, transfers and dinners. That is an estimate rather than an invoice, and a reminder that a door you cannot pay to walk through still has a very good Paris hotel on the far side of it.
December 2020
Twenty-six years later, the price of a party guest was announced on a radio show. Lil Baby, the Atlanta rapper, went on The Breakfast Club, and when Charlamagne tha God asked for his fee he answered “$400 thousand” a show, as BET reported on 9 December 2020. An iHeart summary of the same appearance said he had been getting $200,000 a show before the pandemic. He added that whatever he was paid for a show now was higher than anything he had earned before corona, which may be the only time the pandemic has been credited with a pay rise.
That was a concert fee, said aloud by the man himself. Private bookings are quoted by agencies, and the agencies agree on very little. Seattle Talent Buying gives a private-event range of $100,000 to $145,000, All American Speakers gives $100,000 to $200,000 for live events, and Celebrity Talent International offers an example starting range of $500,000 to $749,000. The gap between the lowest figure and the highest is $649,000, which leaves a great deal of room for an entourage.
Seattle Talent Buying says the usual deposit for artist bookings is 50 per cent, typically paid 30 to 90 days before the engagement, with the balance on the night. Celebrity Talent International notes that travel, entourage and equipment are not necessarily built into the ranges it shows. None of these figures is a quote for anyone’s birthday, and none should be read as one.
22 May 2022
Kourtney Kardashian married Travis Barker in Portofino on 22 May 2022 and acquired, along with the surname, a stepdaughter she had known since the girl was eight. By the time season 7 of The Kardashians reached Hulu she was credited in the cast list as Kourtney Kardashian Barker.
That season premiered on Thursday 23 October 2025, with new episodes each Thursday, and Newsweek reported that it was set around the start of 2025. Reality television runs on a delay. This detail matters later on.
24 December 2025
Alabama, the daughter of Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler, turned 20 on Christmas Eve. The house was dressed in light pink roses, with rose gold balloons spelling out “2-0”. Kourtney marked the day on Instagram with a caption saying she had known Alabama since she was eight.
Then came the presents, which arrived in the press with figures attached. According to the report on E! News, the presents were a diamond-paved Cartier Love bracelet from her father, worth about $38,000, and a pink Birkin from Kourtney worth over $20,000. Hola gave the same two numbers, while the bracelet appeared in Hello! at $32,000, so the same bracelet is worth anything from $32,000 to $38,000 depending on which magazine you read. Most families would count a $6,000 margin as a second present.
The magazine also reported that the bracelet has been a tradition for years, and that the year before she had received more than $35,000 in presents. Reality Tea, via Yahoo, added E!’s two figures together and arrived at “nearly $60K”. None of the three outlets that published the figures stated that total themselves. With the lower bracelet figure, the sum falls nearer $52,000, so “roughly $50,000 to $60,000, as reported” is as close as the record allows. Hermès, characteristically, does not publish Birkin prices.
Even that range covers only two items. In a TikTok shared on 26 December, Alabama also showed a Chrome Hearts hoodie, gloves and bracelets, along with shopping bags from Chanel and Louboutin. Nobody has put a price on any of them, so the haul has a ceiling that no serious outlet has been willing to state.
October 2026
Which brings us to the clip. The post attributes the wishlist to Alabama, but it does not say which birthday the list is for, and the timing is awkward. Season 7 opened in October 2025 and was set around the start of that year, so a scene about her twentieth would more plausibly sit in a later season, and no serious outlet has yet named the episode. The exchange said to follow, in which a stepmother asks about the cost and gets an answer about the budget, is going round as a paraphrase and an attitude, and nobody has yet tied it to a broadcast.
The items themselves are hard to price. No serious outlet has put a figure on a wedding-venue buyout for a birthday, or explained what a Rolls-Royce “sponsor” would involve if someone requested one. The only item on the list with a published price is the rapper, and his price comes as a 2020 radio answer plus three agency ranges that disagree with one another by more than half a million dollars.
So the record contains one bracelet at two prices, one Birkin at an estimate, a wishlist that nobody has matched to an episode, and an older Paris rule that money cannot buy a place in the room. Le Bal holds its 2026 edition on Saturday 28 November, according to Maison Silaïa. Alabama Barker turns 21 less than a month later.
