Three Ways to Celebrate Space This Week

May 28, 2020 Share

A rocket launch, cartoons playing basketball and re-centering with the cosmos…

If there’s a singular subject the whole world has been talking about this year it’s space. For most, the goal is simply getting more of it, being outside, out of isolation and into fresh air. Others however have their sights set higher, literally.

Elon Musk has always wanted to reach the stars, his project SpaceX has been a labour of love that has unapologetically won him rivals and fans around the world. In 2014, NASA signed an agreement with him to create a series of new manned spacecraft to conquer the galaxies and possibly make commercial flights to space a reality.

This week we see the dream come true. At 3:22pm EDT (19:22 GMT) on Saturday the 30th of May (following a bad weather delay on Wednesday), SpaceX will send NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station on a Crew Dragon capsule. Launching out of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, this historic flight will be NASA’s first manned flight in 10 years. You can tune into watch the launch live on FacebookLive, CNN, and other major networks.

If space launches aren’t your thing – what about getting your space kicks via the 1996 classic film SpaceJam, featuring basketball superstar Michael Jordan and cartoon favourite Bugs Bunny? It is currently streaming on Netflix for a limited amount of time and is topping the view charts as one of the 3 most streamed in the world. There’s even a rumoured sequel coming out in 2021… we cannot wait!
