Rentals are affordable here, with monthly prices as low as just $120.
Pai
The farming district of Pai has stunning mountains surrounding it and offers a fantastic mix of traditional Thai and modern Western experiences. Known as a ‘hippy town,’ Pai is a few hours’ drive to the northwest of the better-known Chiang Mai and is a hotspot for yoga retreats, reggae bars, hot springs, and stunning views. Many expats, particularly retirees, choose this town as their base, thanks to its cooler climate and casual way of life.
Chiang Dao
Famous for its coffee, Chiang Dao is widely believed to be one of Thailand’s most stunning locations and is perfect for anybody who wants to be fully immersed in nature. Home to grand mountains and hot springs, it’s within a hours’ drive of Chiang Mai yet a world apart in terms of peace and quiet.
Chiang Rai
Only half the size of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai offers an authentic local experience thanks to its hill tribes, mountains and more isolated location. Famous for its treks and hikes, this part of northern Thailand has a truly timeless atmosphere.
Lamphun
As north Thailand’s oldest town, Lamphun is over a thousand years old and still exudes a timeless ambiance. Sleepy and peaceful, this town is nestled by a river and boasts some amazing historic sites, all within a 40-minute journey from bustling Chiang Mai.
