THE fallout from last week’s social media feud between Britney and her younger sister Jamie Lynn has developed today after Britney threatened her sister with legal action.
Britney’s lawyer Michael Rosengart said that the singer will not hesitate to file a lawsuit if her younger sibling continues to talk about her “derogatorily” during the promotion for her new book, Things I Should Have Said.
The cease and desist letter said: “We write with some hesitation because the last thing Britney wants is to bring more attention to your ill-timed book and its misleading or outrageous claims about her.
“Although Britney has not read and does not intend to read your book, she and millions of her fans were shocked to see how you have exploited her for monetary gain.”
Rosengart’s letter, dated Monday, went on to tell Lynn: “You of all people know the abuse and wrongdoing Britney had to endure during the conservatorship, after initially growing up with a ‘ruinous’ alcoholic father.
“In fact, your own book reportedly states that your father ‘spent most of my life in that cycle of ruinous behaviour. His bouts of drinking caused me periods of torment and sorrow.’”
Despite Lynn recently claiming that her book is not about her sister, Rosengart has insisted that she “cease and desist from referencing Britney derogatorily during your promotional campaign.”
“If you fail to do so or defame her,” the letter reads, “Britney will be forced to consider and take all appropriate legal action.”
The letter comes after a very public social media spat between the two sisters, which stemmed from Lynn’s appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America last Wednesday. Britney reacted with a series of tweets that accused Jamie Lynn of lying about her mental state in 2008 in order to boost sales for her new memoir.
In a series of paragraphs posted on twitter, Britney said that Lynn “never had to work for anything” and that “everything was always given to her”.
The 40-year-old pop star also said she’d be taking a break from Instagram for a while and claimed that the media had treated her unfairly throughout her career. The full twitter thread can be seen below:
