Over three generations, the Waltons have built an entire empire. Recently having bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion this past summer, the consumer retail family from Arkansas are richer than the bottom 42% of Americans.
The Mars Family – $160 billion
At a good 100 billion less than the Waltons, the Mars are still topping the charts with an exorbitant $160bn fortune. It’s peculiar to think that almost everyone in the world has likely tried one of their products (M&M, Milky Way, Snicker bars) at least once in their lifetime, but it sure helps explain their fortune.
The Koch Family – $128.8 billion
An oil family in its (not so humble) origins, the Koch family are the third richest family in the world. 3 generations and some fraternal feuds later and the family latest move includes the selling of a 340,000-acre Montana ranch for $200 million.
The Al Saud Family – $105 billion
Saudi Arabia’s 90-year old monarchy hones a collective fortune fruit of the oil reserves, but not without its fair share of scandals along the way. There was the assassination back in 1975 of King Faisal by his very nephew, or the fact that Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud was an early backer of Elon Musk Twitter ventures.

Six generations and a Birkin later, the Hermès family makes the top 5 of the world’s wealthiest families list with an accumulated wealth of $94.6 billion. Names such as Pierre-Alexis Dumas or Axel Dumas probably ring a bell as some of the family’s most senior positioned members.
